The unveiling of the Optimus GJ means that consumers will soon have a choice of three different handsets that can withstand the wear and tear of a summer beach holiday.
Essentially a rugged Optimus G, the latest LG handset features a 4.7-inch HD display, a rather impressive 13-megapixel camera plus plenty of RAM and processing power thanks to a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm chip. It is a full 1.4mm thicker than the standard Optimus G but it can be submerged under water to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes without incurring any damage.
The phone will officially launch in Taiwan in June and as of yet there is no word as to whether the handset will roll out in other territories, although it looks like it definitely will. Sony, which unveiled the first waterproof smartphone -- the Xperia Z -- in January, was clearly on to something. Since its official release, Sony has released a slightly smaller version -- the Xperia ZR -- and Samsung has announced that it is bringing a similarly water and dust resistant phone, the Galaxy SIV Active, to market for July; now LG makes four.
Clearly a trend in the making and it is arriving just at the moment when consumers pack a bag, grab their phone and head for the beach -- the ideal environment for a water and dust (and therefore sand) resistant phone with a powerful camera and HD video functions.ch/kc
