The latest installment of the street-racing series starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker grossed $120 million at North American box offices over the long Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27).

"Fast and Furious 6" has taken the Canadian and US public by storm. The action flick has gotten off to the fourth-best Memorial Day weekend start in movie history, now holding the slot between "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006) and "The Hangover Part II" (2011). This tremendous showing also represents the best theatrical opening in the history of Universal Pictures.

In worldwide terms, from May 24 to 27 "Fast and Furious 6" made $317 million in box office receipts. The street-racing movie leads the whole pack of new releases hands down in the 60 territories in which it has come out.

"Fast and Furious 6" aside, Hollywood as a whole made a killing over Memorial Day weekend. All told, movies showing in North American theaters raked in $314 million over that three-day period, beating the 2011 record of $276.7 million by a long shot.
