Japanese Olympic organizers tell IOC that athletes will come first in Tokyo

Tokyo, Mar 4 (EFE).- The Tokyo 2020 Olympic organizing committee told International Olympic Committee, or IOC, members on Monday that the goal was to have Games in which the athletes "come first."

The IOC evaluation team visited several venues, including the Ariake arena, which will host the tennis competition, and Harumi, a manmade island in Tokyo Bay that will be the site of the Olympic Village.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's welcome was one of the strong points of Monday's presentation for the IOC officials, Tokyo 2020 Olympic organizing committee and Japanese Olympic Committee president Tsunekazu Takeda said.

Hosting the 2020 Summer Games and the Paralympic Games "is a lifetime dream," Abe said, adding that Japan showed tremendous enthusiasm for the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

The evaluation committee will be in Tokyo until Thursday and will visit Madrid March 18-21 and Istambul March 24-27.

The host city for the 2020 Games will be announced in Buenos Aires on Sept. 7.
