U.S. Sports Desk, Mar 8 (EFE).- Spain's Feliciano Lopez lost in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, falling to Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-2.

In the first set of Thursday's match, Lopez struggled from the baseline and won only 37 percent of his second-serve points against the talented Latvian qualifier, who was more focused and inspired in his service games.

The Spaniard had a chance to break in the second game of the second set, but after he squandered that opportunity Gulbis rolled to an easy victory.

For the match, the 67th-ranked Gulbis struck eight aces to just one for Lopez, while the 34th-ranked Spaniard - who is known for his strong serving - only managed to win a paltry 50 percent of his service points.

In other results Thursday at this hard-court event, the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the season, Argentina's David Nalbandian defeated Spain's Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-2 and Australia's Bernard Tomic downed Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-3.
