Mexico City, Mar 13 (EFE).- Cruz Azul beat Jaguares de Chiapas 1-0 to set up a Copa Mx semifinal clash with America, which advanced after topping second division club Estudiantes in a penalty shootout.
The Jaguares were not intimidated by the atmosphere at Mexico City's Estadio Azul and they generated a number of chances even as their defense stymied the home side.
Cruz Azul picked up the pace in the second half and had an opportunity to score in the 60th minute, but Colombian striker Teofilo Gutierrez's shot went astray.
He made up for that 13 minutes later, when he was pulled down in the area and converted on the penalty, giving Azul what turned out to be the only goal they would need.
Visiting America seemed to be in command when they took a 1-0 lead over Estudiantes with a tally in the 54th minute by Narciso Mina.
But Estudiantes fought their way back into the match and evened the score with Eduardo Lillingston's goal at the 87-minute mark, only to lose 5-4 in the overtime shootout.
Estudiantes' elimination ensured that the eventual Copa Mx winner will be a club from Mexico's first division.
America will host Cruz Azul at Aztec Stadium in their semifinal.
The other semifinal matchup will be decided by Wednesday's Pachuca-Puebla and Atlante-Atlas matches.
