37 Killed when bus plunges into river in India

New Delhi, Mar 19 (EFE).- At least 37 people died and 13 were injured when a bus went off a bridge Tuesday in the western Indian state of Maharastra, a spokesman of the regional police told Efe.

The accident occurred before dawn when the vehicle covering the route between Goa and Mumbai plunged from a bridge into a river in the Ratnagiri district, the spokesman said.

Among the fatalities was a Russian tourist, he said.

More than 125,000 people die every year in traffic accidents in India, which makes it the country with the deadliest road system in the world, mainly due to the fact that highways and vehicles are so often in a poor state of repair, but also because of the little respect shown for traffic laws.
