Washington, Mar 19 (EFE).- Seven U.S. Marines were killed and another seven were wounded during live-fire training exercises in Nevada, the military said Tuesday.

The accident occurred late Monday night at Hawthorne Army Depot.

The troops belonged to the 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

The wounded were taken to hospitals in the area for medical examinations and treatment.

The identities of the troops who died will not be revealed until their families are officially notified.

The cause of the accident, about which no details have been given, is under investigation.

The division commander, Maj. Gen. Raymond C. Fox, sent condolences to the families of the military involved in this "tragic accident," and said the Marine Corps will ensure "they are supported through this difficult time.

"We mourn their loss, and it is with heavy hearts we remember their courage and sacrifice," he said in a communique.

Four marines were killed instantly in the explosion and two more died on their way to hospital, where a seventh passed away, NBC News said.

Hawthorne is a munitions depot and training center in western Nevada covering an area of 59,535 hectares (147,000 acres) and is used as a training center for special operations forces.
