Mexico's America Movil opens door for talks on LatAm Olympics rights

Mexico City, Mar 24 (EFE).- America Movil is willing to negotiate with any company wishing to obtain rights to carry the 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games in Latin America, an executive said.

The company, which is controlled by billionaire Carlos Slim, won exclusive broadcast rights from the International Olympic Committee, or IOC.

"Having obtained exclusive rights means that we get to keep them to offer them on our platforms, both pay television, where we offer this service, and Internet, and we can also resell them to any platform" in Latin America, Arturo Elias Ayub, director of strategic alliances for America Movil unit Telmex, said.

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro will be broadcast in Mexico by Telmex over its online UnoTV service, Elias Ayub said in an interview with the Milenio newspaper.

Telmex is awaiting final congressional action on telecommunications legislation before once again requesting authorization to offer pay television service, Elias Ayub said.

America Movil said Thursday that the IOC granted it exclusive broadcast rights for the Sochi and Rio Games via all media platforms in Latin America, except Brazil, which the body considers a separate market.
