Berlin, Mar 27 (EFE).- A young driver crashed into the Brandenburg Gate early Wednesday in Berlin, damaging the German capital's best known monument, a police spokesman said.
The accident occurred when the 22-year-old driver hit one of the monument's columns without ever applying his brakes, leading investigators to suspect that he fell asleep at the wheel.
The driver was hospitalized with several fractures and his vehicle sustained extensive damage and appears to be a total loss, police said.
Experts will examine the Brandenburg Gate to assess the extent of the damage to the monument, which was finished in 1791 and was once one of Berlin's city gates.
