London, Apr 1 (EFE).- Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 here Monday in a quarterfinal replay to claim a berth in the FA Cup semifinals against Manchester City.
Barely clinging to fourth place in the Premier League, the Blues - FA Cup winners in four of the last six years - played their second match in 48 hours in need of a win to have any hope of snagging a trophy this year.
United, which has a commanding 15-point lead in the League, rested Wayne Rooney and started the match with Robin van Persie on the bench, relying on Chicharito Hernandez to provide spark on offense.
The first half ended scoreless, but Demba Ba put London-based Chelsea in the lead with an elegant strike just four minutes into the second period.
The goal forced the visitors to pick up the pace and it took a finger-tip save by Petr Cech at the 60-minute mark to deny Chicharito the equalizer.
Within minutes of that near-miss, Sir Alex Ferguson sent in Van Persie and the veteran Ryan Giggs to press the attack. Yet though the Dutch international almost tied the match in the 88th minute, Rafa Benitez's charges were solid on defense and agile on the counterattack.
Chelsea will face Man City on April 14.
The other semifinal pits Wigan against second-division club Millwall.
