Mexico City, Apr 2 (EFE).- Cruz Azul midfielder Christian Gimenez said his team must do more than beat America in this week's Copa MX semifinal if it wants to salvage what has been a disappointing Clausura season.
Currently 13th overall in Liga MX, Cruz Azul is three points out of a playoff spot.
"Here, you don't save the campaign with one match. Here, you save the season by being champion. I've always said it: it's very difficult to play for Cruz Azul, even more with the history Cruz Azul has of so many years without a title," Gimenez told reporters at the club's Mexico City practice facility.
"We're going to work ourselves to death and try to improve our image," the 32-year-old Argentine said. "We are a team that was put together to contend for the title and we're not doing that today."
Even so, according to Gimenez, Cruz Azul still has "chances" to qualify for the playoffs.
"I'm not talking about a crisis, but rather a stretch of bad results and, at the moment, we can overcome it," the midfielder said.
A win against "difficult rival" America in Wednesday's Copa MX semifinal could give Cruz Azul the boost it needs to make the playoffs, Gimenez said.
