Mexico City, Apr 7 (EFE).- At least 300 people were evacuated early Sunday in Atitalaquia, a city in central Mexico, due to a fire at a pesiticide plant that unleashed a "toxic cloud," the Hidalgo state emergency management office said.
"We have information that some people were transported to hospitals with poisoning," emergency management office spokeswoman Patricia Muñoz Valderrama told Efe.
The fire started at 3:15 a.m. in three warehouses belonging to Agroquimicos ATC in Atitalaquia and the fire department was notified just after 5:00 a.m., Muñoz Valderrama said.
Residents of the 18 de Marzo and Bojay neighborhoods have been evacuated and some residents of the Tlamaco district may also have been asked to leave their homes.
The fire is under control and the worst of the situation is over, allowing some people to return home, Hidalgo Gov. Francisco Olvera said in a Twitter posting.
Officials have not said what caused the fire to start.
