Malcolm X's grandson dies in Mexico

Mexico City, May 10 (EFE).- The grandson of U.S. political activist Malcolm X died at a Mexico City hospital of injuries received during an altercation, authorities said Friday.

An investigation is under way into the homicide of 29-year-old Malcolm Shabazz, the capital district attorney's office said.

The U.S. Embassy had earlier issued a statement about the death of an American citizen in Mexico City, but withheld the deceased's name at the request of the family.

Shabazz died in the wee hours of Thursday after being brought to a hospital emergency room from Plaza Garibaldi, a popular site for tourists, the DA's office said.

The victim arrived at the hospital with injuries that appeared to be the result of a beating, according to the official statement, which said Shabazz and a friend had been drinking beer at a bar.

Malcolm's mother, Qubilah Shabazz, was one of six daughters of Malcolm X and his wife, Betty Shabazz.

Qubilah was only 4 years old when she witnessed her father's 1965 assassination in New York.

In August 1997, then-12-year-old Malcolm Shabazz was sentenced to 18 months in juvenile detention for starting a fire that resulted in the death of grandmother Betty Shabazz.
