Djokovic beats Goffin at French Open

Paris, May 28 (EFE).- Serbian world No. 1 Novak Djokovic defeated Belgium's David Goffin 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 Tuesday in the first round of the French Open.

Djokovic was pushed hard in a match that went two hours and 13 minutes.

The 26-year-old Djokovic was unable to break Goffin in the first set and did not get a break until the start of the second set, but the Belgian then broke back and pushed the score to 4-4.

Djokovic, who is seeking his first French Open title, got back on track and won.

Next up for Djokovic is Argentina's Guido Pella, who beat Croatia's Ivan Dodig 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 12-10 in a marathon match that went three hours and 24 minutes.

In other men's action, Argentina's Federico Delbonis beat Germany's Julian Reister 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-0, 6-4, while Russia's Mikhail Youzhny defeated Spain's Pablo Andujar 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

Youzhny's next opponent will be Delbonis.

On the women's side, Colombia's Mariana Duque-Merino beat the Czech Republic's Kristyna Pliskova 6-2, 6-0.

Duque-Merino's next opponent will be France's Marion Bartoli, the No. 13 seed, who defeated Olga Govortsova of Belarus 7-6 (10-8), 4-6, 7-5.

The French Open is the second Grand Slam event of the tennis season and the only one played on red clay, the game's slowest surface.
