Paris, May 30 (EFE).- The Williams sisters withdrew Thursday from the French Open women's doubles due to a back injury suffered by Venus, the elder sibling.
Venus and Serena, who had been the heavy favorites to take the title despite being seeded No. 12, pulled out prior to their scheduled first-round match against Russian Alla Kudryavtseva and Australian Anastasia Rodionova.
Serena, the top seed in the women's singles, has cruised through the draw thus far and is scheduled to play Romania's Sorana Cirstea in Friday's third-round action.
Venus, the No. 30 seed in the singles, was upset in the first round by Poland's Urszula Radwanska in three close sets.
