Madrid, Jun 9 (EFE).- Spanish film producer Elias Querejeta died on Sunday in Madrid, Spanish Audiovisual Producers Association, or FAPAE, representatives told Efe. He was 78.

Querejeta was "the best Spanish producer of all time" and a "very special" person who leaves a "great legacy" for future generations in Spanish film, FAPAE president Pedro Perez said.

The producer, who is the father of director Gracia Querejeta, worked on some 50 films, including "La caza" by Carlos Saura, the award-winning "El espiritu de la colmena" by Victor Erice and most recently Fernando Leon's "Los lunes al sol."

His last films as a producer were "Siete mesas de billar frances" (2007) and "Cerca de tus ojos" (2009), which marked his debut as a director.

Querejeta won the 1980 Luis Buñuel Film Prize, the 1986 National Cinematography Prize, the 1987 Europa Cinema Prize as best European producer at the Rimini Film Festival and the 1998 gold medal from the Spanish Film Academy.
