Miami, Jun 12 (EFE).- Air Force One landed Wednesday at Miami International Airport so that President Barack Obama - on a lightning visit to South Florida - could participate in two private fundraising events.

Obama was met on the runway by Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is president of the Democratic National Committee, for which the U.S. leader was collecting donations.

The White House said that the president would be the main speaker at two events to be held in Miami Beach.

The first fundraising gathering is scheduled to take place at the home of businessman Tom Sullivan, the founder and owner of a powerful chain of stores selling wood flooring.

The host of the second event is businessman and philanthropist Joseph W. Blount, who also owns several local businesses in Miami Beach, where he lives and where he is a generous Democratic donor as well as a contributor to other causes such as minority and gay rights.

It costs between $1,000 and $20,000 to get into each of the two events, although donations of up to $32,400 are being accepted.

Obama will speak at both events, which are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., and afterwards, after spending just a few hours in Miami, he will fly back to Washington around midnight.

Obama's long day on Wednesday began in Boston, where he campaigned for Democratic Congressman Edward Markey, who is vying with Hispanic Republican Gabriel Gomez for the Senate seat vacated by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

Markey, 66, who has spent 37 unbroken years in the House of Representatives, and Gomez, the first Latino politician to win primary elections on the state level in Massachusetts, will go up against each other for Kerry's seat in a special election to be held June 25.

Obama also met privately with relatives of Sean Collier, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer who was apparently killed by the Tsarnaev brothers while fleeing authorities after staging the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15.
