International Sports Desk, Jun 18 (EFE).- Belgium's Xavier Malisse upset Spanish world No. 4 and defending champion David Ferrer 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 Tuesday in the first round of the Topshelf Open, a grass-court event in 's-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands.
Ferrer, who had another strong clay-court season and lost in the French Open final to countryman Rafael Nadal earlier this month, was defeated by the talented Belgian in 88 minutes.
In his first match this year on the faster surface, Ferrer failed to convert any of his four break points against Malisse, who hit 10 aces and won 81 percent of his first-serve points.
It was only the second loss in 's-Hertogenbosch for Ferrer, who won this Wimbledon tune-up in 2008 and 2012.
The loss was a setback for Ferrer in his preparations for Wimbledon, which gets underway on June 24.
