Kabul, Jun 24 (EFE).- Seven police officers died when their vehicle ran over a landmine and was blown up in the southern province of Uruzgan, an Afghan official told Efe Monday.
The police vehicle was destroyed by the mine Sunday morning in the Charmastan area of the Chinarato district, the provincial deputy governor, Gul Khan Wardak, said.
"Seven national police died in the explosion," Wardak said, adding that the landmine was planted by the Taliban.
Mines and homemade bombs are, together with suicide bombings, the Taliban's most frequently used methods for attacking the Afghan government and NATO forces, though in practice they also claim numerous civilian lives.
A withdrawal of international troops from Afghanistan is currently underway and should be finished by 2014 if current plans are carried out.
