Madrid committee happy with IOC evaluation of 2020 bid

Madrid, Jun 25 (EFE).- The chairman of the Madrid 2020 bid committee on Tuesday emphasized that the IOC's recent technical report on cities vying to host the 2020 Olympics is "truly spectacular."

"Today is a day of great satisfaction and responsibility because of the position in which we find ourselves," Alejandro Blanco said after learning the results of the International Olympic Committee report.

Madrid is vying with Istanbul and Tokyo to host the 2020 Summer Games. IOC members will choose the host city in a secret ballot set for Sept. 7 in Buenos Aires.

"On the seventh we will have a big test, but until that day we have to continue going in stages. When the cut was made with Madrid in first place, it was the first step toward knowing how we stood, and now we've gotten to the point where the result of this report is truly spectacular," he said.

Blanco emphasized the evaluation of the IOC regarding the distance of the sports venues from the city's downtown area as well as the "high understanding of the responsibility to organize" the Games as strong points favoring Madrid's candidacy.

He also emphasized the local "popular support" for Madrid 2020, a situation reflected in the fact that the sports event last Saturday in support of Spain's candidacy attracted 50,000 people, something - Blanco said - that "the entire world saw."

The report emphasized, the chairman said, the "absolute viability of the project and the optimization of the (existing) resources" as well as the already existing infrastructure.

"We're at a very important moment. We haven't won anything yet, we're where we are, and some days still remain, but all together we can support this project. We're prepared and we want to win the Games," Blanco said.
