Mexico City, Aug 13 (EFE).- Production has started on a vehicle that will be used exclusively in New York City's taxi fleet, with $200 million invested in developing the platform, the Mexican unit of Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Company said.

The Nissan NV200 was selected by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, or TLC, "as the city's exclusive taxi" and is being hailed as the "Taxi of Tomorrow," Nissan Mexicana said.

The vehicles will be manufactured at Nissan's plant in the central Mexican state of Morelos, a facility built in 1966 that has the distinction of being the automaker's first factory outside Japan.

The vehicle is designed to meet the needs of the more than 600,000 daily users of New York taxis and delivery will begin in the fall, Nissan Mexicana said.

Demand currently exceeds supply and the plants in Mexico's Aguascalientes and Morelos states are operating 23 hours per day, the automaker said.

Nissan Mexicana was founded in 1961, employs 13,400 people and has operations in Aguascalientes city, Mexico City, Cuernavaca and Toluca.
