Rio de Janeiro, Aug 19 (EFE). Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes said in a newspaper interview that he will pay "any price" for U.S. director Woody Allen to shoot some of his films in this Brazilian city.

"I really want him to come. I've done everything I could. I'd pay any price for him to come film here," Paes told O Globo, referring to some unsuccessful negotiations years ago with the famous filmmaker.

Paes said that, besides the contacts made by different envoys to win the director's interest, he spoke personally to Allen's sister and even sent him a letter with Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, a neighbor of the director in New York.

"The Reacciona Artista (an actors' union) will kill me when I pay Woody the millions he asks for, but I'm ready to pay 100 percent of the production costs," the mayor said.

Three years ago, RioFilme, the city's official film-promotion agency, reached the point of announcing an agreement with Allen to shoot a feature film in Rio de Janeiro along the lines of "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," the movie the American made in the Spanish city in 2007, but in the end the idea went nowhere.

In recent years the director, who has never filmed in South America, moved his movie locations from his native New York to European cities like Barcelona and London, where he directed the trilogy made up of "Match Point," "Scoop" and "Cassandra's Dream."

Later he chose the capitals of France and Italy to film "Midnight in Paris" and "To Rome with Love."
