Asuncion, Aug 23 (EFE).- Paraguayan police arrested five people, seized 1.8 tons of cocaine and dismantled a drug-trafficking ring with connections in Bolivia and Peru, the Interior Ministry announced Friday.

"We have dismantled an organization engaged in the stockpiling, storage and trafficking of cocaine, and also in arms trafficking," declared the head of the Senad counternarcotics agency, Luis Rojas.

During the operation, carried out Thursday at a town in the northern province of Presidente Hayes and at a rural establishment in the central region of Concepcion, agents arrested five suspects, confiscated "a large quantity of firearms" and found camps with landing fields in their surrounding areas.

Rojas described the raids as "historic."

The operation known as Aguila Negra II was a joint effort of the police, the Senad and the Attorney General's Office, Rojas said.
