Ljubljana, Sep 16 (EFE).- Two-time defending champion Spain lost to Italy 86-81 here Monday in the EuroBasket 2013 tourney, but La Roja will still advance to the quarterfinals thanks to Croatia's earlier defeat of Greece.
With both teams already guaranteed a spot in the quarters, Spain and Italy battled to decide their respective opponents in the next round.
Though Spain's Marc Gasol led all scorers with 32 points, the Italian squad had four players in double-digits.
The teams ended the first half tied 37-37, but the Spaniards, with the Memphis Grizzlies' Gasol directing the offense, surged to take a 56-45 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Spain boosted its advantage to 60-45 in the fourth quarter before conceding 11 unanswered points in four minutes.
The teams ended regulation knotted at 70 points each and Italy outscored the Spanish squad 16 to 11 in the overtime.
Spain's next opponent is Serbia, while Italy will face Lithuania.
