Madrid, Sep 29 (EFE).- Spanish King Juan Carlos's recovery from hip surgery is "progressing rapidly" and even though he is using a walker, "the quality of his stride has improved markedly," doctors said Sunday.

The king is in "good spirits" and "clinically stable," doctors said in the fifth report on the monarch's recovery.

King Juan Carlos doubled the distance he can cover in the past 24 hours, doctors said.

"The recovery, from an orthopedic standpoint, is progressing rapidly" and the surgical wound "remains in perfect condition," Dr. Miguel Cabanela, who performed the hip procedure on the Spanish monarch, said.

King Juan Carlos underwent surgery last Tuesday at Madrid's Quiron Hospital to replace the prosthesis in his left hip and deal with an infection.

This is the eighth operation the Spanish head of state has undergone since 2010 and his fourth hip procedure.

The operation will prevent the king from attending the Ibero-American Summit in Panama on Oct. 18.
