Madrid, Oct 18 (EFE).- Spain's Rafael Nadal announced Friday on Twitter that he would not be competing in next week's Swiss Indoors event in Basel, citing the need to rest after a demanding season.
"Hi everyone ... Sorry to announce that I won't be traveling to Switzerland, for the tournament in Basel, because after these last few very intense weeks I need to look out for my health and physical preparation," the world No. 1 tweeted.
The 27-year-old tennis star said he was confident he would finally be back "next year" at that event, which he has not played since he was a teenager.
Nadal, who earlier this month wrested the No. 1 ranking away from Serbia's Novak Djokovic, has had a busy and extremely successful season, having played 15 events and won 10 of them, including his eighth French Open title and second U.S. Open crown.
In his last two tournaments on the ATP World Tour's Asia swing, Nadal lost in the Beijing final to Djokovic (taking over the top ranking in the process) and the Shanghai Masters semifinals to Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro.
Nadal's next scheduled event is the Paris Masters, which begins on Oct. 28.
