Damascus, Oct 20 (EFE).- At least 30 civilians were killed and dozens of others wounded Sunday when a truck bomb was detonated on the outskirts of Hama, a city in central Syria, the official Sana news agency reported.

The incident was a "terrorist suicide attack," the news agency said.

The truck, which was packed with 1.5 tons of explosives, blew up at the entrance to the city on the highway that links Hama to al-Salmiya.

A truck transporting cylinders of butane was passing as the truck exploded and also blew up.

The death toll could rise due to the severity of the wounds sustained by some of the victims, Sana said, citing a high-level official.

The explosion damaged more than 20 vehicles, as well as buildings and shops in the area, which is home to a plant that manufactures agricultural machinery.

The report has not been verified independently due to the restrictions imposed on journalists by Syrian officials.

More than 100,000 people have died since Syria's civil war started in March 2011, the United Nations says.
