Baghdad, Feb 11 (EFE).- At least 15 Iraqi soldiers were killed Tuesday in an attack on a military post located in the northern province of Nineveh.

The attackers, suspected of being linked to Al Qaeda, slit the throats of most of the troops and then fled the area, a security source in Nineveh told Efe.

After the pre-dawn attack, Iraqi army troops deployed in the zone and reestablished control of the base, launching a widespread sweep to try and capture the attackers, the source said, adding that the assault had the hallmarks of operations by Al Qaeda.

Also in Nineveh, Iraqi parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi was the target of an assassination attempt.

Osama, Iraq's highest-ranking Sunni politician, and brother Atheel al-Nujaifi, the governor of Nineveh, were unharmed when a roadside bomb detonated as their convoy was passing in the Al Gafran area.

Meanwhile, at least 25 suspected members of Al Qaeda died on Monday when a truck they were loading with explosives blew up prematurely in a village north of Baghdad.

Iraq is experiencing a resurgence of sectarian violence and terrorist attacks, which in 2013 took the lives of 8,868 people, 7,818 of them civilians, according to United Nations figures.
