Mexico City, Jul 23 (EFE).- Six gunmen suspected of ties to organized crime were killed in separate shooting incidents in the northeastern border state of Tamaulipas, Mexican authorities said Wednesday.
Five people died Tuesday night in clashes among rival criminal outfits near Reynosa, a city just across the border from McAllen, Texas, a source in the Tamaulipas state government told Efe.
Another gunmen was killed when marines on patrol in the town of Valle Hermoso repelled an attack.
While the source did not mention any criminal organizations by name, Tamaulipas has long been a battleground in the struggle between the Gulf and Los Zetas drug cartels.
Besides the gunfights, Tuesday night also witnessed criminal groups blocking roads and setting vehicles on fire to obstruct the movements of security forces, according to media accounts.
The Mexican government has deployed additional Federal Police and military personnel to Tamaulipas in recent months.
