London, Aug 26 (EFE).- Manchester United is expected to finalize the transfer of Real Madrid's Angel Di Maria on Tuesday for 59.7 million pounds ($98 million), which would make the Argentine the most expensive signing in the history of English soccer.
English media reported that the fee the two teams agreed is more than the record 50 million pounds Chelsea paid Liverpool in January 2011 for Spanish striker Fernando Torres.
BBC reported that the 26-year-old Argentine winger, who arrived Monday night in Manchester, will undergo his medical on Tuesday and the deal will be officially announced later in the day.
Manchester United, which has kicked off its Premier League campaign inauspiciously with a loss and a draw, has not yet confirmed the deal.
After drawing 1-1 with Sunderland on Sunday, Man United's Dutch manager, Louis van Gaal, said he could not make statements regarding possible incoming players.
Manchester United has spent 75 million pounds ($123 million) in recent weeks to sign several new players, among them Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera, Argentine defender Marcos Rojo and English left back Luke Shaw.
Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti told a press conference last Thursday that Di Maria asked to leave the club earlier this summer and had since refused to sign a new contract with the Blancos.
Rumors about an eventual transfer of the Argentine began to swirl after Real Madrid acquired Colombian attacking midfielder/winger James Rodriguez earlier this summer.
