A 30-year-old man, who was arrested from his Mughalpura house during a police raid a couple of days ago, was recovered tortured to death from the canal on Monday, police and eyewitnesses said.
It was learnt that five policemen raided the residence of Rizwan alias Raja in the Wali Park area and picked him up on the charges of drug-peddling. The cops did not take the man to the police station and preferred to keep him under illegal detention at a private torture cell.
Brother of the deceased, Ramazan, told reporters on Monday that the policemen badly tortured Rizwan and the private torture cell and later fled away after throwing his body into the canal after the man expired during ‘interrogation. ’
The policemen did not mention the arrest of the accused person in the police record. According to police sources, five policemen of Harbanspura police station raided the house of Rizwan and arrested him a few days ago.
“The policemen severely tortured my brother just to extort money. As he expired because of torture, they dumped the body into the canal to conceal the killing,” visibly dejected Ramazan told reporters at the city morgue. He further said that when they reached the police station to know about the whereabouts of his brother, Rizwan, the policemen denied the arrest, stating that no raid was conducted at their house.
On early Monday, some passersby spotted a dead body floating in the canal and contacted the emergency police by phone. The police reached the spot and removed it to the morgue. The policemen also made announcements in the local mosques, requesting the general public to help police ascertain the identity of the deceased.
Ramazan, brother of the deceased, rushed to the spot and identified the deceased as his brother, Rizwan. Ramazan also disclosed the happening to the locals, triggering strong protest demonstration against the police.
As the matter was brought into the notice of the top police officers, the police registered a criminal case against five policemen on the charges of murder and abduction.
A police officer claimed that three of the policemen are arrested after registration of the case while two cops are still at large. The case was registered on the complaint of Ramazan, against ASI Murtaza, and four police constables including Fazalur Rehman, Kamran, Shahid and Shafaqat.
