President Dalia Grybauskaite presented letters of credence to the Lithuanian Ambassador to Belarus, Evaldas Ignatavicius, the presidential press service said.
Lithuania and Belarus maintain economic, cultural and transit relations. According to the President, Lithuania aims to have with its neighbours constructive and mutually beneficial relations which are based on European principles and norms.
Belarus is one of Eastern Partnership countries. The Eastern Partnership Summit will be held this autumn in Vilnius. During its upcoming presidency of the EU Council Lithuania will have a task to cooperate with Belarus on these issues.
Lithuania and Belarus have signed an agreement on facilitated cross-border movement. Belarus is expected to finalize internal procedures which will make it easier for residents of the border region to cross the border.
Ignatavicius has been working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1991. He has been Lithuania's Consul General in Kaliningrad and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Germany. Lately, he has served as Vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.
