Hockey Club of Pakistan in the next 18 months will be equipped with new blue Astroturf as Pakistan Hockey Federation secretary Asif Bajwa and secretary Sports Department Sind, Siddique Memon signed MoU here Tuesday at HCP.
After the installation of the blue Astroturf, HCP will become only the second stadium in the country with the facility of the blue turf after Lahore’s National Hockey Stadium.
“We must have four to five blue turf grounds in the country to have our players get accustom themselves before going to the tournament, which would be played on blue turf,” Asif Bajwa said during the MoU signing ceremony with Sind government officials.
He said that FIH, the international hockey federation, has not made it mandatory to hold international tournaments on blue turf but many international tournaments like Olympics are now being organized on blue turfs.
“FIH have not made it mandatory to hold tournaments on blue turf. Many international tournaments are still being organized on conventional green turfs. However, many high profile tournaments like Olympics are being organized on blue turf so it has become our need to also have blue turfs in order to prepare our players whenever they are going for international tournaments, which would be played on blue turf,” he explained.
The expense of the installation of the blue turf and revamping of the stadium has been estimated to Rs 57 million.
