A car owner had a lucky escape when the vehicle he was driving caught fire on Al Burj Street near CBD area on Monday morning. He was able to escape in the nick of time to avoid burn injuries.

Shouaib al Balouchi, owner of the 2005 Toyota Camry, had to abandon his vehicle as smoke and flames appeared from the rear of the cabin at 10.35am on Monday.

“A fellow motorist tried to douse the flames with a fire extinguisher but police, who had arrived by the time, told him to step away in case the fuel tank exploded,” said Balouchi.

“The flames burnt the entire interior of the car. I was lucky to get away. A few more minutes inside the car and I could've been in serious trouble. I don’t know the cause of the fire. Authorities are investigating and they will let me know as soon as they have answers.”

Balouchi had bought his GCC specification car in 2009. “I bought it for RO2,400 and have been upgrading it since then. The car used to be plied as a taxi in the UAE. Its odometer marked 200,000km. I added a sound system, speakers, and just two weeks ago, I purchased rims for the tyres,” he said. “Since I opted to get third-party insurance, I won’t be getting any money from the insurance company.”
