The 2013/2014 school year in Latvia will begin on September 2 and end on May 30 next year, according to the Cabinet of Ministers' regulations approved by the government today.
The next school year will end on May 30, 2014 for children in grades 1-8 and 10-11, on June 13, 2014 for ninth grade students and on June 20, 2014 for 12th grade students.
The first semester will last from September 2 until December 20, while the second semester will begin on January 6 and end on May 30 next year for children in grades 1-8 and 10-11. It will be slightly longer for ninth grade and 12th grade students, ending on June 13 and June 20, respectively.
The autumn holidays are set for the period from October 28 until November 1. The Christmas holidays will begin on December 23 and continue until January 3. Next year's spring holidays will last from March 17 to 21 for students in grades 1-11 and from March 24 to 28 for 12th grade students. The summer holidays will be from June 2 to August 29 for children in grades 1-8 and 10-11.
Each school can also take an independent decision to extend the holidays during the second semester by an additional one week for all 1st grade pupils. A project week can also be organized for the second semester of the study year, with schools again deciding on this on an independent basis.
