Nikkei opens 1.88 lower on weak U.S. manufacturing data

Nikkei declined sharply Tuesday morning as weak U.S. manufacturing data dampened investor sentiment. At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average plunged 228.41 points, or 1.88 percent, from Monday at 11,906.61. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 19.68 points, or 1.97 percent, at 980.89.
