Otjozondjupa wins Namibian Newspaper Cup

Otjozondjupa Region is now the new champion of The Namibian Newspaper Cup competition for this year.

The Otjozondjupa Regional under-20 soccer team defeated Omaheke on Monday afternoon by one goal to nil (1-0) in their second half of the match to win the finals here at the Paresis Sports Stadium.

The 2013 The Namibian Newspaper Cup took place in Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa Region with all the 13 regions participating in the competition.

Otjozondjupa the hosts, won the Newspaper Cup’s trophy, gold medals of the players and N.dollars 20 000.

The chairperson of the Newspaper Cup’s local organising committee, Thomas Petrus on Wednesday last week introduced the Otjozondjupa Regional under-20 team to the Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, Samuel Nuuyoma.

During the introductions, Petrus said that the Otjozondjupa Regional under-20 football team’s participation in the 2013 The Namibian Newspaper Cup was dedicated to the late Omaheke Regional Governor, Rapama Kamehozu.

Kamehozu died last Saturday (23 March) in Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek after a long illness, and he was buried on Saturday (30 March) in Grootfontein.

Kamehozu served as Otjozondjupa Regional Governor from 2010 until he was deployed to the Omaheke Region in December last year.

In second place, the Omaheke Region won the silver medals and N.dollars 10 000.

Playing for the third place, Khomas defeated Erongo on Monday with four goals to nil (4-0).

This is the second time Otjozondjupa Region is winning the cup.

It won it again in 2005.

The cup has been also won by Erongo Region in 2012, while in 2010 and 2011 Khomas kept it.

The same Newspaper Cup was also won by Omaheke Region in 2009.

The Newspaper Cup patron, Dr Hage Geingob as well as the Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, Samuel Nuuyoma and several Deputy Ministers also watched the finals of the Newspaper Cup competition here.

The football tournament started Friday until Monday.

The patron of the Newspaper Cup, Prime Minister Hage Geingob as well as Otjozondjupa Governor Nuuyoma and several deputy ministers were present at the finals of the competition on Monday.

The football tournament started Friday and ended Monday.
