Turkish president to visit Lithuania

On Wednesday, April 3, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite will meet President of Turkey Abdullah Gul. During the meeting the presidents will discuss Lithuania-Turkey bilateral relations, business ties, and the prospects of their development. In the run-up to Lithuanian presidency of the EU Council, the heads of state will also touch upon the progress in Turkey's EU accession negotiations, the presidential press service reports.

The Turkish leader is coming with a large business delegation. The presidents will review economic relations between Lithuania and Turkey, the opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation in developing the railway project Viking which connects the Baltic and Black sea regions. They will open Lithuanian-Turkish business forum during which a memorandum of cooperation in this project will be signed.

The heads of state will also address the possibilities to promote business relationship, investments and trade. Last year, trading turnover between the two countries reached LTL 961.2 million/EUR 278.6 million.

Turkey is one of the most popular outbound tourism destinations for Lithuanians. New direct flights on the Vilnius-Istanbul route, planned from this June, are to increase tourist flows between Turkey and Lithuania.

This is the first official visit to Lithuania by incumbent Turkish President Gul. In 2004, he visited our country as deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Turkey.
