Enver and Fatma Yirmibesoglu have been living on an isolated island where there are no public utility services available for the past 38 years after they became angry with their previous neighbors in Samsun.

Aybedir Island is 70 kilometers off the Samsun coast and 20 kilometers from the coast of Bafra district. The couple makes a living by fishing and learns what is going on in the world via a battery-operated radio. The island is accessible by a 15-minute boat ride from Samsun.

The 65-year-old Enver said they moved to the island in search of a quiet life. “My wife and I are very happy living here. We keep ourselves busy with fishing and farming. Those who know that we live here alone come here to meet us. That makes us happy. We don't have electricity or water service but we like this kind of lifestyle. Some people may not like it, but I like living in this tranquil place because I am used to it. The chickens, cats and dogs are our companions and share our food,” he said. The refused to discuss the incident that prompted the couple's move to the island.
