Estonian beekeepers produced 1,000 tons of honey last year and sold three quarters of it directly to consumers, Äripäev Online reports.
According to the Estonian Market Research Institute (EMRI) study "Structure of the Estonian beekeeping sector", 748 tons of the honey production was sold.
Estonia's honey production varies a lot year after year - in 2000, it was 334 tons, in 2008, 501 tons The average honey production per hive has grown from 14 kg in 2000 to 27 kg last year.
According to the Public Broadcasting, 5,934 agricultural units and households were engaged in producing honey last year, of which 17 were professional beekeeping farms with over 150 hives and over 5,200 were hobby beekeepers.
