Girl killed by crocodile in Okavango River

An eight year-old girl was attacked and killed by crocodile while she was swimming in the Okavango river at Shamangorwa village situated 150km east of Rundu on Tuesday.

It is alleged that the deceased and four other children went to the river after their afternoon class studies to fetch drinking water.

Kavango regional Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Crime Investigations Co-ordinator, Deputy Commissioner Willie Bampton said on Thursday that after the children filled up their buckets with water they then started swimming in the river.

The deceased was suddenly grabbed by a crocodile which emerged from nowhere and took her away.

Deputy Commissioner Bampton said the deceased’s body has not yet been found by Thursday morning, but police search for the body by the police water wing unit still continues.

The deceased was identified as Kashova Muyeu, a resident of the Shamangorwa village and her next of kin were already informed.

In an unrelated incident, a 37 year-old man hanged himself with a rope on a tree at Dumushi village situated 90km east of Rundu on Tuesday afternoon.

Police report says the reason for the suicide has not yet been established as no suicide note was left behind by the deceased.

The deceased was identified as Mungamba Likuwa, a resident of the Dumushi village and his next of kin were already informed.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Kavango Regional Crime Investigations’ Co-ordinator, Deputy Commissioner Willie Bampton said on Thursday that after the children had filled up their buckets with water, they started swimming.

Bampton said the deceased’s friends told the police that this was when the girl, who has since been identified as Kashova Muyeu, was attacked by a crocodile.

By Thursday morning, the police were still searching for her remains.

Muyeu was a resident of the Shamangorwa village, and her next of kin have already been informed of her death.

In an unrelated incident, a 37-year-old man allegedly hanged himself from a tree with a piece of rope at the Dumushi village - some 90km east of Rundu - on Tuesday afternoon.

A police report availed to this news agency says the reason for the suicide has not yet been established, as no suicide note was left behind by the deceased.

The deceased was identified as Mungamba Likuwa, a resident of the Dumushi village.

His next of kin have been informed.
