Media commission recommends ECP cell to oversee political ads

The media commission headed by Justice (retd.) Nasir Aslam Zahid has submitted a preliminary report in the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP).

The commission has recommended the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to set up a special to ensure fair distribution of political advisements.

The report said that transparent distribution of government advertisements and media freedom should be ensured. A cell, it said, should be set up at the ECP office to watch over the political advertisements.

It further said that caretaker governments should ensure that all candidates get equal coverage in state-run media. The state media should be allowed to work independently.

The report further called upon the caretaker government to ensure safety of journalists. It also urged media houses to establish an internal audit cell.

It demanded that PEMRA initiate legal action against illegal channels and transmissions.
