SC orders fool proof mechanism for granting right to vote to overseas Pakistanis

Supreme Court (SC) has ordered a joint fool proof mechanism be evolved for granting right to vote to overseas Pakistanis till April 1 and warned officers found responsible will be sent packing home if this is not done.

This order was issued by a special bench of SC headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry during the hearing of case Friday.

The court was told that secretary IT was not present in the special meeting held under Attorney General (AG) Irfan Qadir , therefore, final shape could not be given to arrangements.

The court showed a stern reaction over it and remarked “internal conflict in different ministries particularly ministry of IT is beyond comprehension.

During the course of hearing Afnan Karim Kundi said “we can develop and provide soft ware within three days if we are allowed.

CJP directed chairman NADRA to extend help in working out mechanism. Better soft ware can be got developed by GHQ by asking ministry of defence.

CJP remarked “ we will not leave alone who are providing assistance to put the country on the way to progress. Extending the facility of casting vote to overseas Pakistanis is also their right and it is also responsibility of all other national institutions including Election Commission (EC) as well. We want they should also cast votes in the upcoming election. Set up polling stations in embassies and whosoever wills will come and cast his vote”

The court ordered that strategy to cast votes in top ten countries be devised. Polling stations be established in embassies. Law ministry, ministry of IT , EC and ministry of overseas Pakistanis should jointly work out methodology.

The hearing of the case was adjourned till April, 1.
