TRNIDAD-DEATH-One of the sextuplet babies dies

One of the sextuplet babies has died 19 days after he and his two brothers and three sisters became the first recorded case of sextuplets in the Caribbean.

Relatives said that Kaylan Nasir Lee Foon-Cummings had been critically ill ever since he and his other siblings were delivered by caesarean section at the Mount Hope Women's Hospital on March 4.

Kaylan died on Saturday, but the other babies are reported to be doing well at the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Media reports Monday said that the baby died of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and that his parents Petra Lee Foon, a teacher, and Kieron Cummings, a bank employee, were at his side when he passed.

"They were able to talk with him and be with him before he took his last breath," one newspaper quoted a relative as saying.

"Everybody is really sad right now, but (the parents) are coping. They are trying and need to be strong for the other babies," she added.

Chairman of the North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) Dr Shehenaz Mohammed confirmed the baby's death, but would not divulge details due to the sensitivity of the matter.
