Hartal in progress in 4 districts

A dawn-to-dusk hartal called by Islami Chhatra Shibir, student front of Jamaat-e-Islami, is progressing peacefully in Rajshahi, Chapainawabgna and Natore districts on Sunday.

The shutdown was called demanding release of detained Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists. In Rajshahi, educational institutions and shops remained closed due to the hartal. As HSC and its equivalent examinations were kept out of the purview of the hartal some vehicles carrying the examinees were seen plying the streets.

However, no long route bus left or entered the district. In Chapainawabganj, some pickets put up barricade on road at Shibtola and Tolghar areas in the town by burning tyres and putting tree logs on the roads.

Almost all modes of vehicles, except rickshaws, stayed off the roads and shops kept their shutters down. In Natore, Jamaat-Shibir activists staged demonstration at Harishpur in the town in the morning demanding release or their leaders and activists.

They put up blockade on Natore-Dhaka highway by burning tyres. When police rushed to the spot the hartal supporters left the place.

However, no untoward incident was reported from the three districts till 9:50 am. The hartal was announced on Friday night through a joint statement signed by Anisur Rahman, president of Rajshahi unit Jamaat, and Ashraful Alam Emon, president of Rajshahi University unit.

In the statement, they threatened that if Dr M Jahangir, acting secretary of Jamaat Rajshahi city unit, Anwarul Islam, office secretary of the Shibir city unit, and other arrested Jamaat-Shibir activists are not released within the next 24 hours, they will enforce hartal in the three districts.

On Friday noon, law enforcers arrested Jahangir, also director of Islami Bank Medical College and Hospital, from Naodapara in the city.

Meanwhile, in Laxmipur, a half-day hartal called district Jubo Dal protesting the killing of sadar upazila Jubo Dal vice-president is progressing peacefully in five upazilas Sunday.

Hartal supporters brought out procession at bus terminal, Dakshin Temuhuni, Mandari and Hajirpara in the district town and put up blockade by burning tyres and felling tree logs on the roads. Some crude bombs were also exploded in the morning.

A huge contingent of police was deployed at different strategic points in the town. Jubo Dal leader Nazrul Islam Liton was shot dead by some terrorists at Radhapur village in sadar upazila on Friday night.
