Federal Minister for National Regulations and Services Shahzada Jamal Nazir has urged to formulate a task force to check quackery as it is causing spreading of ailments. He also directed to prepare pricing policy of drugs at the earliest in order to provide medicines to the people at lower prices.
He expressed these views while chairing separate meetings of Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) and Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) here on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Ministry of National Regulations and Services, Imtiaz Inayat Elahi, Senior Joint Secretary Arshad Farooq Fahim and other high officials of the ministry.
Briefing to the minister, Senior Joint Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of DRAP, Arshad Farooq said DRAP Act safeguards the interest of the patients, the pharmaceutical industry and the officials working in the authority.
Talking about the functions of the DRAP he said quality assurance, quality control and post marketing surveillance of drugs has been given due recognition adding a separate division is being established to assure affordable prices for the patients as well as make pharmaceutical industry sustainable.
Manufacture licensing, pricing, import, export and control of drugs are the main functions of the authority. A campaign is being launched to control spurious drugs and for the purpose a task has been constituted, the CEO added.
The minister was informed that a separate department has been established for the sake of quality control of drugs. Provinces have also drug testing laboratories while central drug laboratory is in Karachi. A National Surveillance Laboratory is also being set up by the federal government.
DRAP, CEO informed the minister that there is a need to strengthen laboratory network, pharmacovigilance and post marketing surveillance, establishment of Bio-equivalence centers and adoption of coordination mechanism by provinces.
