Trinidad and Tobago women’s cricket team had triumphant starts to their tour of South Africa by winning their two T20 matches in contrasting styles over the weekend. The visitors opened with a crushing nine wicket win over Gauteng but later were forced to scrape through needing a super over to pull-off a two run win over Northerns. A decent all round performance from Kirbyina Alexander led Trinidad who bundled out Gauteng for only 42 runs in 18.4 overs with no batswoman reaching double figures.
Samantha Bissoon took two wickets for four runs while Alexander bagged two for six. Trinidad had little problems getting to the target on the strength of an unbeaten 17 from Alexander and 13 not out from Britney Cooper.
In the other encounter, Northerns posted a challenging 147 for three off their 20 overs behind national player and Captain Mignon du Preez’s unbeaten 79. In response, Stacy-Ann King led from the front with 42, while vice-captain Shenelle Lord chipped in with 23 to leave the scores level and forcing the super over.
Alexander was in form again restricting Northerns to 10 in the super over after Trinidad made 12. Trinidad’s tour of South Africa continues with two 50 over matches against Northerns on Tuesday and Gauteng on Thursday.
