Expressing concern over the alleged financial corruption in the polio-eradication funds in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the ulema engaged in the campaign demanded an inquiry against the health officials responsible for misappropriation.

Addressing a press conference here at press club, the National Research and Development Foundation (NRDF) former provincial coordinator Maulana Jehanzeb alleged that health officials working under the Unicef anti-polio program were failed to eliminate polio, while the huge funds reserved for the campaign were not appropriately used in the province.

Flanked by Maulana Abdul Malik, Maulana Tariq, Maulana Baseer, he said that they had played a vital role to address polio refusal cases by creating awareness among the masses through special sermons.

Despite the fact, he lamented the programme had been discontinued for the last six months due to hypocrisy of the health officials working under the Unicef programme in the KP.

He also said the health officials, working under Unicef programme, blamed Ulemas of taking Rs5,000 per sermon to create awareness among masses. He, however, lamented that the amount as per agreement with the NRDF wasn’t given to them till date.

“The Ulema demands of the Unicef high-ups to conduct an inquiry into the misappropriations in funds allocated for polio-eradication and bring the health officials responsible to justice, he maintained.

“The polio refusal had come down to very marginal ratio with the efforts of Ulema,” he said. He also blamed that the officials don’t want to windup the programme for the sake of their personal benefits.
