LG CNS, a IT service provider, launched an electric car rental service Tuesday that integrates its latest technology, called “City Car.” The company collaborated with its car rental subsidiary Evron to offer the short-term car rental service that applies its IT solutions to increase convenience in booking cars.

Evron was founded last year as part of the company’s plan to diversify its portfolio, aimed at including forward-looking businesses in its revenue line.

LG CNS stressed the use of electric cars and its IT systems make it not only cost-efficient but also environmentally friendly. Efficiency and green energy are two factors the company has been consistently stressing for the past few years.

The IT solution provider said car sharing is a new trend in transportation, citing the success of U.S.’s ZIPCAR, France’s Auto-Lib and Germany’s Car2Go. “We’ve made sure the level of our service is within the global standard, and have absolute confidence that subscribers for the new service will get the most convenient service,” said a LG CNS spokesman.

City Car is a subscription service for those over 21, for which members register credit cards that will be automatically charged a pay per use as well as a 30,000 won ($26.32) monthly payment. Subscribers can book cars using the Internet or smartphones.

The service costs 6,300 won per hour. Users are required to rent for at least one hour, and after will be charged in 30-minute increments. Customers renting between the hours of 10 p.m. and 9 a.m., pay just 10,000 won, irrespective of driving time.

The new service is initially available in three locations in Seoul and will be expanded to 40 by the end of the month, the company said. One hundred and twenty vehicles are available for use, with 27 charging stations in the metropolitan area.

“We recognized that electric cars and a new efficient registration system using the latest advanced IT will be an integral part of future society and are developing our service accordingly,” said the spokesman, adding more cars will possibly be added depending on the success of the service.

LG CNS is also focusing on infrastructure solutions for future cities that integrate IT, such as its own smart green platform for security and city management.
