On 10 April in Vilnius, the Lithuanian Deputy-Minister of Foreign Affairs Neris Germanas met with the Ambassador of Ukraine to Lithuania Valeriy Zhovtenko to discuss bilateral relations and close cooperation of the two countries within international organizations, Lithuania's MFA said.

The meeting discussed the decision of the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to pardon jailed former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, a close ally of Yulia Tymoshenko, on April 6. According to the Foreign Deputy-Minister, this step is crucial for solving the problem of selective justice and allows to presume that Ukraine's leadership is serious about the signing of an Association Agreement at the Eastern Partnership Summit on 28 and 29 November in Vilnius, which would be so far the most ambitious agreement signed between the European Union and a third country.

Germanas also stressed that the EU expected that Ukraine's leadership would also take another action and follow the steps, as set out in the conclusions of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting on 10 December 2012, including ensuring democratic elections, implementing judicial and other reforms, based on the respect for common European values.
